The gods loved Baldur more than anything they had made. He was luminous — not as a metaphor but as a fact. Light came from him. He was the most beautiful thing in the nine worlds and he knew nothing of darkness because darkness had never found purchase in him. Frigg, his mother, extracted an oath from every living thing in creation — stone, metal, fire, water, every plant, every animal — that none would harm her son. Every single thing swore. Almost.

The plant that belongs to neither

Mistletoe grows between earth and sky. It roots not in soil but in the bark of other trees — oak, apple, hawthorn. It belongs to neither world. It was too young, Frigg decided. Too small. Not worth asking. She passed it by.

Loki noticed.

The gods, certain of Baldur's invulnerability, had made a game of throwing things at him — spears, stones, fire — and laughing as everything bounced away harmlessly. Loki guided the blind god Höðr's hand. The mistletoe struck Baldur. He fell. The most luminous thing in creation, killed by the one thing that had been overlooked. The one thing that belonged nowhere and had sworn nothing.

What the myth encodes

The Summer Solstice — June 21 this week — is the longest day. The sun at its absolute peak. And then, immediately, the turning begins. The light that has been climbing since December 21 reaches its height and begins, imperceptibly, to decline. The peak is the beginning of the loss. You cannot stand at the highest point without immediately beginning to descend.

Every culture that observed the solstice understood this. The Germanic Sonnenwende — the sun-turning — was not a celebration of summer arriving. It was the acknowledgment of the hinge. The bonfire lit on the hilltop was not triumph. It was accompaniment. The human fire rising as the solar fire begins its long retreat.

Baldur's death is the mythological encoding of that moment. The most luminous principle, destroyed at the peak of its power, by what was overlooked. By what belonged to neither world and had made no oath.

What Loki understood

The agent of managed decline does not attack at the moment of weakness. It waits for the moment of greatest confidence — when the protection seems complete, when every oath has been sworn, when the game of invulnerability has become a celebration. Then it finds the one thing that was passed over. The exception that was too small to matter. The plant that grows between worlds and belongs to neither.

Baldur will return after Ragnarök. That is the other half of the myth. The luminous principle is not destroyed — it is withdrawn. Waiting. The archive holds what the withdrawal has left behind.

The sun turned this week. The light begins its descent. The fires are lit on the hills.
